A Christmas Toast

With lots of snowfall the last few days in South Limburg, we're having a White Christmas this year. This photo was freshly taken this morning in the backyard in a snow covered Landgraaf. Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year! Vrolijk Kerstfeest en een Gelukkig Nieuwjaar!

Black and white and grey tones (2)

Life drawing and painting, focused on roughly painting in a large format (100 cm x 70 cm) capturing the light and dark with a spalter brush in black and white and grey tones. Acrylic on paper. The first rough watery sketch rather appealed to me, so I decided to just leave it as it is and made a second version for adding more paint.

Waiting for the Maestro

Another sketch inspired by aspects of Bonnards work as seen in a recent exhibition, particularly an interior scene, perspective, a faithful little (dachshund) dog and a cat demanding attention. It started out as a quick preliminary sketch of this idea I had for a watercolour, but I got a bit carried away drawing with my new fountain pen and eventually decided to just leave it as it is and do a separate watercolour version later on.

Fountain pen portrait sketches

Quick fountain pen portrait sketches #1. Trying to get a grip on drawing with a fountain pen that I got as a birthday present (November 7th) I decided to start doing quick portrait sketches with it on a regular basis (preferably every day). With no preliminary measuring or sketching and little opportunity for corrections because of the factual definiteness of the ink lines I also hope to improve my hand-eye coordination in combination with portraiture skills. And for the rest it's just accepting mistakes that occur and hoping to learn from them. The person portrayed is Jerry, a member of Julia Kay's Portrait Party on Flickr. Ballpoint on telephone bill

With limited time for sketching, most of my sketches are just quick doodles done in between or even during other activities and often just on scraps of paper, envelopes, napkins or whatever is at hand at that moment in time. During a short break from working in the garden I did this quick and messy sketch on a telephone bill I recently received. Normally it would have ended up with most of the other scrap paper sketches in the waste paper bin, but on second thought I found the concept of a "ballpoint on telephone bill"-technique rather amusing, so I kept it and here it is. The person portrayed is Harry, a member of Julia Kay's Portrait Party on Flickr. See the next posts for more portraits I did of him.

She's Got Eyes!

The "All Eyes on Kees van Dongen" exhibition in Rotterdam inspired me to do a "big eyes"-sketch, not in Van Dongen's style as such, but with some of the aspects of his work in mind, particularly the expressive, colourful portraits of women with big eyes. This watercolour sketch is the result. It's based on a photo of a young woman with striking eyes that I came across on the internet.

A Toast to Bonnard

After visiting the "Bonnard" exhibition in Wuppertal, I set out to do a playful sketch with some aspects of his work in mind, particularly colour, perspective, an interior (table) scene and a cat making an appearance. I used my mother's dining room as a base for a rough and distorted sketch of an interior and then added the rest from imagination. Ink pen and watercolour.

Bonnard

Visited the "Bonnard" exhibition in Wuppertal. It gives a very nice insight into his life and development as an artist and of different aspects of his work. Like his use of colour and unusual perspectives and his fondness for intimate domestic interior scenes and uniting interior and exterior through open windows and doors. Many items on loan from around the world, quite a few coming from private collections.

eGGheads on Newton

I've been intending to do some kind of cartoon based on some ideas I've had for quite a while, but didn't find it particularly easy to think up characters and a specific angle for such a cartoon. After a lot of doodling and trying things out I eventually came up with this cartoon named "eGGheads". The name of the cartoon of course refers to the shape of the characters heads, but furthermore it also hints on the definition of the word "egghead"; the Oxford Dictionary defines "egghead" as an informal noun meaning "a highly academic or studious person; an intellectual". In this sense the word is also used in a BBC general knowledge quiz show in which teams from all over the UK battle to beat the "Eggheads", a team of five highly regarded quiz and game show champions (including Mastermind and Brain of Britain). The concept of my cartoon is that of a brainy and rather fierce egghead character (a true representative of his kind according to the above definition) that likes to share (or is it just plain showing off?) his knowledge and meets up with some rather laid-back egghead characters (certainly no true representatives of their kind according to the above definition), perhaps best to be described as the bad eggs in the bunch. I hope you enjoy it.

Vineyard Tasting

With the wine harvest season coming up in this part of the world, grape picking and wine tasting holidays are being advertised with "tasty" photos. One of them in particular caught my eye and I used it for a watercolour sketch.

Sunflowers

Some sunflowers in the garden broke off during a storm and thus wound up in a rather small vase on the dining room table, looking very picturesque. I tried to catch this in a watercolour. Not particularly satisfied with the result, but still, here it is.

Sun King

In 1986, in the wake of their successful album "Love", British rock band The Cult performed at the Pinkpop festival in Geleen in the south of The Netherlands, near to where I live. As a young rock music and guitar enthusiast I enjoyed this performance very much, especially guitarist Billy Duffy's powerful guitar riffs and his use of mouthwatering Gretsch hollowbody electric guitars. In 1992 the band was back at Pinkpop (now in Landgraaf, the town where the festival is organized since 1988 and also the town where I now live) but this time delivered an ill-famed performance leading to the band being banned from future perfomances at the festival. Yesterday, 18 years later and after the ban was lifted, The Cult played the Pinkpop stage once again, now during the festival's Classic edition. This time I didn't go, but a photo in last weeks newspaper announcing the band's return to the festival and showing Billy Duffy in a heroic rock guitarist pose with one of his Gretsches triggered me to do a sketch instead. "Sun King", the title of the opening track from The Cult's 1989 "Sonic Temple" album again showcasing Billy's guitar work, seemed to be an appropriate title for this sketch. Ink pen and watercolour.

The Church of Varengeville-sur-Mer

The church of St. Valéry in Varengeville-sur-Mer on the Normandy coast is picturesquely situated on top of a cliff. Alongside it, there are magnificent views over the sea far below and of the Normandy coastline with its high chalk cliffs which, not surprisingly, attracted many artists to this spot. Georges Braque designed a stained glass window for the church and is buried in the churchyard. Claude Monet painted the church and its surroundings several times. Here's an attempt of catching it in a watercolour myself. This tranquil place later inspired me for a poem: "Coastline / Sound of the sea / Waves to me".

Hungry Beaks

A few weeks ago a couple of blue tits occupied a nest box in my mother's backyard. Judging by the frequency with which they now are flying in food there must be a lot of hungry beaks to feed inside. I used a photo in a magazine, conveniently showing a blue tit feeding its young, for a sketch of what it must look like in there. Ink pen and watercolour.

Kandinsky and Der Blaue Reiter

Visited the "Kandinsky and Der Blaue Reiter" exhibition in The Hague. A nice retrospective of the work and lives of this group of artists. I became particularly interested in their work when I took an Open University art history course on Expressionism some time ago.

Exhibition "Colour"

On Friday evening, the exhibition with the theme "Colour" in the town hall of Landgraaf was opened by the mayor. The exhibition consists of a presentation of paintings and sculptures created by students of VAZOM art school and artists from "Op de Bies", an institution for people with a mental handicap. Our portrait & model class was well represented, with special thanks to our inspiring teacher Annemiek Jongen! Art classmate René Fijten has made a nice overview of the paintings of our group and also a sketch of Annemiek amidst the crowd. Shown below is my entry. Onderstaand mijn bijdrage.

The Most Beautiful Museum in the World

Visited the exhibition "The Most Beautiful Museum in the World" in Essen. With these words Paul J. Sachs, American art historian and co-founder of the Museum of Modern Art in New York, described the Museum Folkwang during a visit to Essen in 1932. After the National Socialists took power a large part its collection was confiscated as "degenerated art" and sold. The exhibition aims at reconstructing, for the first time, the Museum Folkwang’s original collection. I thought it was an interesting exhibition and particularly enjoyed Franz Marcs "Grazing Horses IV (The Red Horses)" on loan from Harvard Art Museum as I had seen many of the other exhibited items during an earlier visit to Essen. A bit disappointing was the fact that, outside the exhibition halls, parts of the newly renovated museum were not quite finished, resulting in empty rooms without exhibited art.

Colour triptych Elle

Final version of the colour triptych that I made during the portrait & model class for the exhibition with the theme "Colour". It's based on a photo triptych (in black and white) that I came across on the internet and found very striking. As it didn't mention the name of the young woman depicted, I chose to name her "Elle". Acrylic on canvas (60 x 60 cm each).

Colour

The portrait & model classes of the past few weeks were focused on creating artworks for an upcoming exhibition in the town hall of Landgraaf, with the theme "Colour". Apart from some finishing touches and without the watercolours that at that moment were being framed, these are the results of our efforts.

Green earth technique

Life drawing and painting, introduction to the "green earth technique" in portrait and model painting, an old technique especially used to get lively flesh tones. Starting with an underpainting in green earth colour (mixed only with white and black for different shades of green) the painting is then completed using thin layers of transparent earth colours (we used ochre, burnt sienna, raw ombre). Unfortunately time was too short to actually finish them, but the results give an impression of what can be achieved with this technique. Acrylic on paper.

Sleeping Cat - Nemuri Neko Figurine

The figure of a sleeping cat has a special meaning and status in Japan and in Japanese art. Nemuri neko [眠猫] is Japanese for sleeping or peaceful cat but it also is the name of a famous sculpture of such a cat in the Shinto Tosho-gu shrine in Nikko, Japan and has been an inspiration to Japanese artists. The first time I came across such a sleeping cat figurine was in the house of Claude Monet in Giverny (now a museum). He had a special interest in Japanese art and received a sleeping cat figurine as a present from a Japanese. It lay very peacefully and cozyly on a cushion in the dining room and I found it very striking. I kept it in mind and later on bought one myself and now used it as a model for a watercolour.

Flamenco

Inspired by some fine "mixed drawings" I saw lately (especially those by Ester Wilson) I set out to do something like that myself. With my old spanish guitar as the basis for an idea this is the result. It's actually not the loose and casual mix up I had intended and which I appreciate in the kind of works mentioned before.

Cat

I like the way many artists have made cats a subject in their art. Théophile Steinlen and Pierre Bonnard are just two artists whose depictions of cats I find really special (and I'm certainly not the only one ... came across this very enthusiastic blog-report on paintings of cats and Bonnard's cats in particular: Pierre Bonnard - a great painter of cats). So when, in an ad for pet supplies, I saw a photo of a cat lying in this very majestic pose, I just had to try it out myself and catch it in a (ink pen-) watercolour.
